Mesa Arizona Pest Control Before Holiday Guests: A Scorpion and Termite Check for Your Home

Hosting this season? A Mesa, Arizona pest control check for scorpions and termites: guest rooms, garages, patios and the foundation before family arrives.

Before holiday guests arrive, a quick Mesa, Arizona pest control check should cover two things: scorpions in the rooms and spaces guests will use, and termite signs along the foundation while you are already cleaning up outside. Fall and early winter are a good time to do it. Peterson Pest Management treats homes across Mesa, and this is the check we would suggest before the house fills up.

Two Mesas, two kinds of homes

Mesa is really two different cities when it comes to pests. Older neighborhoods have mature citrus, shade trees and established landscaping. Newer builds farther out have fresh block walls and newer construction. Scorpions and termites can show up in both, but where you look first changes depending on which kind of home you have.

Scorpions: start with the guest room

Rooms that sit empty most of the year are where a scorpion can go unnoticed. Before guests arrive:

  • Pull the bed away from the wall and make sure bedding does not touch the floor.
  • Shake out stored linens and blankets before putting them on the bed.
  • Check closets and the floor along baseboards with a flashlight.
  • Look at the door sweep on any exterior door near the guest room.

If kids are visiting, take a little extra time in the rooms where they will sleep and play.

The garage and the entry

Guests often come and go through the garage, and luggage gets set down on the floor. Clear a spot for bags off the floor, check the seal along the bottom of the garage door, and make sure the door into the house closes tight.

The patio and backyard

Holiday gatherings often spill outside on mild evenings. Scorpions come out at night looking for water and cooler ground. Before a backyard gathering:

  • Bring pet water bowls inside at night.
  • Shake out cushions and check under patio furniture that has not moved in weeks.
  • Clear stored items away from the block wall.

Bark scorpions glow blue-green under ultraviolet light. A blacklight walk along the wall the week before guests arrive is a simple way to see your activity level.

Termites: look while you clean up outside

Decorating and yard work put you near the foundation anyway. Take a few minutes to look for:

  • Pencil-width mud tubes on the stem wall or block foundation
  • Discarded wings near windows, doors or outdoor lights
  • Wood trim or fence posts that sound hollow or feel soft
  • Firewood stacked against the house for the season

Older Mesa yards with mature trees and wood fencing are worth a closer look. Newer homes are not off the hook either, since irrigation can keep soil damp against the foundation. If you find a tube, do not scrape and spray it. Leave it so a technician can see it, and get an inspection. Our termite control page explains what happens next.

What a Peterson visit covers

Mesa pest control FAQ

Is it too late in the year for scorpions in Mesa?

No. Fewer sightings in cooler weather do not mean the population in your walls and yard has left.

Do I need to leave the house during a visit?

Not usually. Treatment is planned around who lives in the house, and our technicians tell you what to expect before starting.

Can I book a one-time visit before guests arrive?

Yes. One-time service is available, and recurring service is an option if you want ongoing coverage.

What if I find a mud tube while decorating?

Leave it in place, take a photo and call for an inspection.
