Scorpions in Gilbert, AZ - Why Cooler Weather Does Not Clear Them Out

Scorpions in Gilbert, AZ do not leave when the heat breaks. Bark scorpions live in block walls, under landscaping rock and in the gaps around foundations all year, and Peterson Pest Management, based right here in Gilbert, treats the whole property where they actually live.

Summer is when most people notice them. Calls climb once the heat sets in, and monsoon storms push scorpions up and inside to stay dry. When nights cool off, sightings usually drop. The population that was there in August is still in the wall.

Why Gilbert is bark scorpion country

Gilbert grew fast on land that used to be farms and dairies, and most of it is built with block walls. Those walls give bark scorpions what they want: dark, narrow gaps between block and mortar, with easy climbing between the yard and the top of the wall.

From there it is a short trip through a weep hole or a gap around a door into the house. Grading for new subdivisions does not remove scorpions that were already on the ground. It pushes them toward the nearest cover, which is often the new wall and landscaping.

Fewer sightings is not the same as fewer scorpions

When you stop seeing scorpions on the patio, it is easy to think the problem solved itself. Usually they are just less visible. Block walls, rock beds, woodpiles and stored items in the garage all stay sheltered as the weather changes.

Irrigation keeps the yard softer and cooler than the open desert around it, which keeps crickets and other small insects close. Where the food stays steady, scorpions settle in and stay.

What to do around the house this fall

Fall is a good time to cut down the places scorpions hide close to the house:

  • Clear harborage - move woodpiles, stacked pavers and clutter away from the walls of the house
  • Check the rock beds - landscaping rock right against the foundation gives scorpions cover next to the entry points
  • Seal the obvious gaps - weep holes, gaps under doors and openings around plumbing and utility lines
  • Add door sweeps - especially on garage and patio doors
  • Watch the lights - a porch light left on draws crickets, and crickets draw scorpions

Sealing and door sweeps help alongside treatment, not instead of it. They reduce how many make it inside between visits.

Check your own wall with a blacklight

Bark scorpions glow blue-green under ultraviolet light. On an evening that is still warm, a blacklight flashlight along the block wall, patio and landscaping shows what is actually there. It will not fix anything, but it is a useful way to see the activity level before service and again afterward.

Why a spot spray does not hold

Most homeowners who call after a spot spray describe the same pattern. Something got sprayed, it worked for a week or two, and then scorpions were back.

The spray only reached the surface where one was seen. The scorpions inside the block wall, under the rock bed or behind a woodpile were never touched.

What a Peterson scorpion service covers

A Peterson scorpion service treats the whole property in one visit:

  • Interior baseboards, door thresholds and other places scorpions travel once inside
  • The exterior perimeter and foundation, where most entry points sit
  • The block wall and yard, where the population lives and breeds
  • Advice on harborage worth removing close to the house
  • A follow-up schedule set to the activity level at your property

Most Gilbert homes with scorpion activity do best on a recurring schedule, and one-time service is available if you only need a reset. Every visit is planned around your family and pets.

A note on stings

A bark scorpion sting is painful for anyone and can be medically significant for small children, older adults or anyone with a strong reaction. If someone stung has trouble breathing, severe swelling or symptoms that worry you, treat it as a medical situation and seek care.
